Jewellery Care & Aftercare
Last updated: 2 August 2026
Every Novia Diamonds piece is made to be worn and enjoyed for years to come. Fine jewellery is naturally delicate, however, and regular care will help preserve its beauty, structure and sparkle.
Everyday Care
To keep your jewellery looking its best:
- Put jewellery on after applying perfume, hairspray, moisturiser and other beauty products.
- Avoid contact with bleach, chlorine, cleaning products and other harsh chemicals.
- Handle your jewellery gently and avoid pulling, twisting or placing pressure on settings and clasps.
- Check claws, settings and clasps regularly. If anything feels loose or unusual, stop wearing the piece and contact us.
- Keep jewellery away from hard surfaces that may scratch the metal or damage the setting.
Platinum and gold may naturally develop light surface marks with wear. This is a normal part of owning fine jewellery and is not considered a fault.
When to Remove Your Jewellery
We recommend removing engagement rings and fine jewellery before:
- Sleeping
- Showering or bathing
- Swimming or using a hot tub
- Exercising or playing sport
- Cleaning or washing dishes
- Gardening or carrying out DIY
- Cooking or handling raw food
- Applying creams, oils, fake tan or beauty products
- Any activity that may expose the piece to pressure, impact, chemicals or extreme temperatures
Diamonds are extremely durable, but the metal and setting holding them can still bend, loosen or become damaged.
Cleaning Diamond Jewellery at Home
For most diamond jewellery set in platinum or gold:
- Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild washing-up liquid.
- Allow the jewellery to soak for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
- Gently clean around the diamond and setting using a very soft toothbrush.
- Rinse carefully in a separate bowl of clean water.
- Pat dry with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.
Always clean jewellery over a bowl rather than an open sink or drain.
Do not use toothpaste, bleach, abrasive cleaners, boiling water or hard brushes, as these may damage the metal or setting.
Novia Diamonds also offers one complimentary professional clean and service each year for jewellery made by us. During the service, we will clean the piece and inspect its settings, claws and overall condition to help keep it looking its best. If we identify any work that falls outside the complimentary service, we will explain the recommended next steps and confirm any costs before proceeding.
Gemstones and Delicate Pieces
Some gemstones, including pearls, opals and emeralds, require specialist care and may not be suitable for soaking, steam cleaning or ultrasonic cleaning.
Please contact us before cleaning a piece if you are unsure which method is appropriate. We will be happy to advise you based on its materials and construction.
Storing Your Jewellery
Store each piece separately in its Novia box, pouch or another soft-lined jewellery case.
Avoid storing several pieces together, as diamonds and metal edges can scratch other jewellery. Chains should be fastened before storage to help prevent tangling.
Keep jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture and extreme changes in temperature.
Repairs and Aftercare
Novia Diamonds offers complimentary repairs for eligible jewellery made by us, subject to assessment and provided the piece can be safely and structurally repaired.
We will always do our best to restore your jewellery. If a repair is not possible, or if replacement materials, diamonds, gemstones or significant reconstruction are required, we will explain the available next steps and confirm any applicable costs before proceeding.
Complimentary repairs do not cover:
- Lost diamonds or gemstones
- Accidental or impact damage
- Damage caused by improper care or misuse
- Significant reconstruction
- Theft or loss of the jewellery
- Normal surface wear and scratches
- Work required because of alterations made elsewhere
We recommend arranging suitable insurance for valuable jewellery to cover accidental damage, loss and theft.
Resizing
If the size supplied is incorrect or the client’s finger size later changes, resizing may be possible.
Novia Diamonds offers one complimentary resize of up to two UK ring sizes, provided the adjustment is structurally possible for the design.
Resizing by more than two sizes may be available at an additional cost. Eternity bands and certain intricate designs may be difficult or impossible to resize without affecting their structure or appearance.
Work Carried Out by Another Jeweller
Please return your jewellery directly to Novia Diamonds for any resizing, repair, polishing, setting or alteration.
If another jeweller works on or alters the piece, Novia Diamonds’ complimentary repair and resizing warranty will become invalid. We cannot accept responsibility for the quality of third-party workmanship or safely guarantee jewellery that has been altered outside our workshop.
This does not affect any statutory rights relating to faults that were present when the jewellery was supplied and are unrelated to the third-party work.
Requesting a Repair, Resize or Service
Please contact us before sending or bringing jewellery in for inspection.
Include:
- Your full name
- Your order details
- A description of the issue
- Clear photographs or videos where possible
Once we have assessed the piece, we will explain the options, expected timeframe and any applicable costs before beginning work.
